Apple TV Could Overtake TiVo & Netflix

 Mar 19 2007, 07:56 PM | Comments: 0 | Discuss this

ThinkEquity analyst Jonathan Hoopes stated "Apple TV is an ideal conduit for multiple services including DVR, paid-for content, gaming, or advertising."
"Apple TV can, in our opinion, be easily turned into a DVR with little or no hardware modification and a software upgrade," he wrote. "We think Apple's brand, established distribution, marketing power, over 100 million total iPod unit shipments, and 22 million active Mac users would create more than enough energy to propel an AppleTV TiVo-like service to a higher subscription base than TiVo's current 4.4 million users."

"Whereas Netflix brought 'Blockbuster' to your mailbox, we believe AppleTV will bring Hollywood to your living room," he told clients. "Moreover, we think this device is well-positioned to quickly overtake Netflix as broadband Internet access becomes more ubiquitous and the Internet becomes the de-facto channel for content delivery."

To get the smallest size possible, Apple may also be leaving out an optical drive from the notebooks.

The sub-notebooks will also help boost Apple's sales in the Japanese market where micro technology is extremely popular. Apple's Tim Cook in a recent press conference stated "..we're not pleased with our performance there and we've got a number of activities underway to attempt to improve them."

Apple Posts Steve Jobs' Thoughts on Music

 Feb 6 2007, 03:11 PM | Comments: 0 | Discuss this

Apple.com today posted an article by Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs titled "Thoughts on Music" which essentially details Apple's current stand on DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected music. Jobs explains that if it were up to Apple they would make music availble DRM free, because DRM as it stands today is easily broken and is not effective at all in protecting music.

Steve Jobs also argues that the "big four" music companies sell the majority of their music via CD sales which has no copy protection at all. And allowing their music to also be DRM free online would open up even more avenues of revenue from companies interested in selling music online.

Wal-Mart Worried by Apple's iTunes Sales

 Sep 22 2006, 01:46 PM | Comments: 0 | Discuss this

Wal-Mart is apparently worried about the recently released iTunes Movie Store and how Apple's sales will cut into DVD sales. Wal-Mart is one of the largest DVD retailers in the industry and "studio executives say Wal-Mart has overtly threatened to retaliate if they go into business with Apple."

At the moment Apple has only signed a deal with Disney to sell their movies on iTunes, but is in talks with other movie studios to expand the range of titles available. Apple sells movies for $9.99-$14.99 which is less than DVD's at Wal-Mart.

"We all want to be in the Apple business," one executive is quoted as saying. Disney recently sold 125,000 iTunes downloads in its first week, and the positive reaction will lead to more interest from other movie studios, which Wal-Mart does not like.

Google may Supply iTV Content

 Sep 18 2006, 10:12 AM | Comments: 0 | Discuss this

According to Newsweek, Apple and Google are in talks over supplying video content to Apple's iTV.

Is it possible that when iTV ships next year, you may also be able to choose a menu item called Google Video, and then zip through the best of the thousands of user-submitted videos on the search giant's service? Google's consumer product chief, Marissa Mayer, tells me that indeed, the two companies are engaged in talks.

This is interesting because it also brings up the question of what other content Apple could include with iTV, which will feature wi-fi and enable internet access for content.
